Emission from the Prototypical LINER Galaxy NGC 1052

چکیده
We examine the 0.1 to 10.0 keV X-ray spectrum of the bright nuclear LINER galaxy NGC 1052, one of two elliptical galaxies known to contain a luminous H2O maser. The observed 2.0 − 10.0 keV spectrum is unusually flat (photon index Γ ∼ 0.2) and best described as intrinsically power-law shaped nuclear flux that is either (1) attenuated by a complex absorber with ∼ 70% of the nuclear flux absorbed by a column density of NH ∼ 3× 10 cm−2 and ∼ 30% absorbed by a column density of NH ∼ 3 − 5 × 10 cm−2, or (2) reprocessed, with the nuclear source blocked and the X-rays Compton reflected in our direction by high column density (≥ 10 cm−2) gas. The moderate equivalent width of the Fe Kα line favors the dual absorption model as the most likely scenario. The 0.1 − 2.0 keV spectrum does not resemble the few times 10 to 10 K thermal Also NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, MD 20771 Also Astronomy Department, University of Maryland, College Park, MD 20742; [email protected]

متن کاملHST Observations and Photoionization Modeling of the LINER Galaxy NGC
We present a study of available Hubble Space Telescope (HST) spectroscopic and imaging observations of the low ionization nuclear emission line region (LINER) galaxy NGC 1052. The WFPC2 imagery clearly differentiates extended nebular Hα emission from that of the compact core. Faint Object Spectrograph (FOS) observations provide a full set of optical and UV data (1200-6800Å). These spectral data...
متن کاملJet emission in NGC 1052 at radio , optical , and X - ray frequencies
We present a combined radio, optical, and X-ray study of the nearby LINER galaxy NGC 1052. Data from a short (2.3 ksec) CHANDRA observation of NGC 1052 reveal the presence of various jet-related X-ray emitting regions, a bright compact core and unresolved knots in the jet structure as well as an extended emitting region inside the galaxy well aligned with the radio synchrotron jet-emission. The...
متن کاملPositional Coincidence of H 2 O Maser and a Plasma Obscuring Torus in Radio Galaxy NGC 1052
We present multi-frequency simultaneous VLBA observations at 15, 22 and 43 GHz towards the nucleus of the nearby radio galaxy NGC 1052. These three continuum images reveal a double-sided jet structure, whose relative intensity ratios imply that the jet axis is oriented close to the sky plane. The steeply rising spectra at 15–43 GHz at the inner edges of the jets strongly suggest that synchrotro...
متن کاملIonised, Atomic, and Molecular Gas around the Twin Radio Jets of Ngc 1052
The bright radio structure of the LINER elliptical galaxy NGC 1052 is dominated by bi-symmetric jets on parsec scales. Features move outward on both sides of the core at v app ∼ 0.26c. We have established the occurrence of free-free absorption, and suggest the presence of a patchy, geometrically thick region oriented roughly orthogonal to the jets; components have a wide range of spectral shape...
